Birthday Bash! [recap]

Post by cbarnesATC »

Keith,

Wonderful & EXCITING event :) Sorry I could only do 1 leg.

Although on your end I'm sure the "issues" weren't fun; on our end it made this event just that much more interesting! I've never flown a missed approach due to an ATC outage before until today.

Keep up the good work and keep the events coming! It was a great turn out!

Sorry to have participated in the Meltdown Keith. For the record I did sqwawk 7600 on my 6 mile final into BUR.

Great job as always. Cool under stress. BUT it was one hell of a Birthday Bash, my TCAS got a workout. LOL

Wow. Just wow. That was thrilling. I was on short final for VNY at the moment "Black Sunday" hit. I went missed (not knowing the proper missed proc.), basically did a right traffic. Then - low and behold - I ran out of fuel on the downwind!! Ditched down on a highway just to the northwest of VNY. Overall though, that was awesome. I just hope the blood pressure was manageable in the ATC facilities :)

Thanks guys! I'll post a post-mortem later today. It certainly was interesting. We had a first time bug where none of the frequency changes were taking effect for ALL pilots. We worked it for a few minutes in that configuration and eventually decided to do a restart after each controller made an announcement.

Thankfully, most people came back online and we got it under control.

The most exciting part was working a guy into Burbank (who I shouldn't have been working, but his frequency change to 134.20 didn't take effect), coordinating it with the guy who DID own that sector, and then having to pull him off the final because a NORDO aircraft was coming up from behind, considerably faster, also going to Burbank.

I think you guys will enjoy the video.

So that means you missed a chance to make several legal unusual ATC calls. Namely "Minimum fuel", "emergency", and the always popular "state souls on board and fuel remaining"............

At the risk of Monday morning quarter backing this, it seems to me the "minimum fuel" call should have been made on final (or maybe even when there were 45 minutes remaining). With "minimum fuel" declared this would put everyone in the mind set that going missed without a valid reason (someone on the runway or no visual at decision height) isn't the 1st choice.

I have to add with everyone else. It was actually an good exercise in how to handle the lost communication situation. In my case the controller told me to go around while I was on short final. The lost communications hit during the go around for re-sequencing. I was most proud of myself as set squawk to 7600 and flew the full ILS approach from UMBER (looking for traffic all the way). ATC communication was restored while on 2 mile final to land KVNY 16R.

This also offers an example WHY it's important to be well familiar with the flight plan and approach even when being vectored.

It was so great to hear the other pilots on the frequency and the extra radio traffic really added to the over all experience. These events are great in my book.

BTW, what was the high point in terms of number of people online? There were so many that I couldn't count. Seems like this event blew the past record out of the water!

Yep, I'll be honest... I totally panicked and didn't have clue what to do or what I was doing (...as evidenced here).

My learnings include the need to read up on: fuel planning and management (inc. "minimum fuel"), NORDO procedures and missed approaches.

At one point, I saw "32 current pilots" on the home page. But I'm sure it was more at peak.

I'm pretty sure I was the Bonanza in front of you coming out of SMX, and one of the last to get into VNY before the coms went south. I flew that approach as fast as I comfortably could to since I knew I had your faster plane behind me. I guess not quite fast enough, huh! I was watching for you to come in and your go around was the first clue for me that all was not well.

Being new at working with ATC and PilotEdge in general, I decided against flying in the Bash. I figured I'd be in the way. After following some fantastic streams happening on Twitch, I can say it looked like a blast! Despite the communication issues encountered, the skill and professionalism of the controllers was so awesome! With as much traffic as was being dealt with, the controllers handled the traffic very well from what I could see (and hear).

I hope my skill set will improve to a point where I'll be able to fully participate when the next big event drops.

Hats off to Keith and the staff at PilotEdge!

I can't say enough good things about last night. It was an absolute blast. Using the shared cockpit addon for X-Plane, Ty and I were able to get all the way from KLAS to KBUR without using the autopilot, or running into anyone. (We'll leave out the part where I wrote down the taxi instructions incorrectly and taxied for far too long on C at LAS). Youtube video will be up shortly, and I'll edit this post with the link.

As always, the professionalism of controllers and pilots continues to make PE the best community out there for flight simmers.

I was right behind ChrisS on final at BUR when the comms went dead. Panicked and decided to go missed instead of land as I should have. Ole' 737 got a work-out that's for sure! Funniest part was hearing the guy announce he was ditching and he'd see us all in heaven! lol

Awesome night. Wish we could do it again soon!

P.S. It's OKAY Chris, I stopped and let you guys get in the correct line. :)
