New Airports Coming in XP 10.35

Post by stevekirks »

Release notes of the beta for 10.35 here show that a slew of new airports are about to be added.

Highlights:
  • Fixed pronunciation of “Wind” in ATIS audio on Windows
  • Map settings of GPS are now saved in prefs per plane
Whole list is worth a read...

Indeed, and they're all contributed by users as part of the Scenery Gateway Project. My versions of KEMT, KBVU, KTSP, U30, and CL13 should be in the next version. I've been thinking about organizing a call to arms like Jan Vogel did for German scenery to get every airport in the PilotEdge coverage area some sort of default scenery.

I've been submitting scenery for airports that I can't find scenery for otherwise, which happens fairly often when using FSEconomy. So far I've submitted: CN64, KBLH, KOXR, L06, and L54.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I hope you guys are uploading good, accurate versions of the airports you're mentioning. So far, I'm unimpressed with the stuff I've downloaded from the Gateway. For example, I downloaded my home airport, KBZN, and it is in no way even close to the real world layout. Not only are building placement and type wrong, but even the layout is wrong! Did anyone even bother to look at an airport diagram? Just a quick closeup look at the airport with Google Maps would tell you the scenery is way off. I've done a fair amount of airport scenery for V9.7. At least I did my best to make sure the airports were as accurate as OE and WED would allow me to produce.

With that said, thank you to all you scenery designers who DO take the time and effort to create accurate X-Plane renditions for all of us to enjoy!

I do my best to make fairly accurate renditions of the airports. That being said, keep in mind that submissions to the Gateway can only use objects from the Laminar object library, which while good, is fairly limited. You aren't going to get Org quality airports from the Gateway. I too was unimpressed with the offerings from the Gateway when they first came out. Then I started making them and realized the limited palate the designers have to work with. That's not to say some designers don't just throw buildings in haphazardly, but I try to make mine reasonably accurate with the resources available. That also being said, I'm not going to spend 10 hrs on an airport for the Gateway when a better one could be made for the Org using any object library available. :D
