Windows 10 and X-Plane

Post by stevekirks »

I spent the day doing a clean install of X-Plane 10.36via Steam and the new Windows 10 x64 and I have to say I'm very impressed. Win 10 is instantly usable by someone from the land of Win 7 and the new SSD I installed certainly gives this old machine some snap. Even with the defaults and the basic Nvidia drivers, I was able to pull 30FPS on the FlyJSim 732 without a struggle. I was also able to pull some of the rendering settings up a notch. PE client loads fine with no special instructions. In the morning I'm going to debug the Saitek panel drivers and add in FSEconomy.

Overall, it's a breath of fresh air for Windows. It's the future without being overly weird but still has some great UI ideas.

Cautions: can't disable Windows Update downloads and some of the features may share some data you don't expect. Otherwise "come on in, the water's fine!"

Hmmm, the 2 parts of that sentence aren't really compatible in my eyes ;)

PS - You know, sometimes I wish I had XP on Steam. Had to return a set of XP discs for scratches, and the second set I got also have a few problems. Could be my ODD, though I somewhat doubt it considering I tested on multiple units. Out of curiosity, did you do a clean install or just upgrade?

It's pretty easy to go through the Privacy control panel and disable everything. Kind of like doing it on your phone to prevent trackers and such.

I just completed a KSNA-KSFO flight with X-Plane at the defaults and used the FJS732 and it was great. Overall, it's just a little smoother and nicer than Windows 7 and seems to use my older hardware more efficiently. FSX via Steam works great too. The PE Client was a little unhappy but that's always hard to get coordinated on Steam because of the install order.

Next I'll update the Nvidia drivers and add in the HDmesh v3 scenery, then some airports to bring it back to what it was before.
