Real World VFR

Just finished watching the Real World VFR series, and I want to highly recommend it. For those who don't know, it's a video series of 10 VFR flights in a 172 with Keith Smith and CFI Jeff Van West. They go to a lot of interesting spots; grass strips in the mountains and on Martha's Vineyard, the NYC Hudson River corrider, busy arrivals into Teterboro and Boston Logan, night water crossings, etc. The visuals are fantastic (cameras everywhere), and there are lots of entertaining moments (“I was flapping, but I don't know if that means anything” and the “inoperative” strobe light come to mind). Hearing the perspectives and insights of two very good, experienced pilots, while seeing the mistakes they make and address in real time, makes this series unique. There's also some interesting use of the simulator to practice short and soft field ops, as well as night departures and engine out procedures. Lots of takeaway for my own flying and CFI-ing. Real pilots are obviously the target audience here (lots of WINGS credit available), but I think sim pilots who enjoy watching twitch streams will really like this too.

Ryan, if you haven't already, check the night time arrival into MPV in the Bonus section. That's probably one of the best videos in the entire series, and it wasn't even one of the official flights (it was a repositioning leg when the schedule didn't work out on one of the days).

Really enjoyed the videos. Great series - very nicely done. I particularly enjoyed the time spent on the pre and post-flight briefings. Thanks Keith!

I am a "Sim-only" pilot due to color blindness...but I enjoyed the VFR and the IFR workshops very much! So much to learn there, and you can do everything in the sim.
However, Post Mills looks better in FSX with FTX Global and UT USA installed compared to X-Plane

Really loved this stuff, and highly recommended for Sim pilots as well.

Just finished the series - loved it! Adding Jeff to the mix and multiple camera angles were fantastic upgrades from Real Work IFR (which was awesome too) and the bonus videos were a nice touch. I'm hoping the "real world" series continues...maybe mountain flying or setting up new IFR challenges in the air with a static camera on the panel in addition to POV and iPad overlay.

Anyway - thanks so much for your work on the series and willingness to share the good and "less good" that really happened.

Hi Thomas, I'm not surprised to hear that having two layers of add-ons for FSX resulted in a better visual than stock scenery in X-Plane for a remote, non-towered airport.

To clear up any confusion, Thomas is referring to the Real World VFR and Real World IFR products, not the PilotEdge workshops.

Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it. We've been in pre-production for the next Real World product for a little while. Shooting starts Thursday! We think we have a good solution for the static camera. It's a chest-mounted cam which is aimed at the panel. I have tried various solutions for a statically mounted camera in the cockpit but haven't been able to solve the vibration issue just yet. So, we're going to use my body as a shock absorber for now. Lord knows there's enough padding there!
