I don't know for sure but I haven't seen an indication for further development in this direction.
But honestly, I didn't pursue it either, as I had to put PE on hold for at least the rest of the year.

the PE plugin for xplane now supports the use of a custom groundspeed dataref as requested.

Very good, see the v1.3.1 release notes in the xplane forum for details as to how to set it up.
