I'm not sure that doing multiplication in my head is the easiest thing to do during a busy approach phase, but to each his own. For the record, I prefer the "chop and drop" method on a non-precision approach. For precision approaches, I always start with 500 fpm, watch the GS and adjust as necessary.

But I fly slow airplanes, so I can get away with some imprecision.

Not to belabor this too much, but given that your Vref, and hence your GS, in a given aircraft is going to be fairly typical on approach-- it is a multiplication that should be pretty familiar.

If you prefer chop & drop, then it is not an issue in any case.
