Pierre,

This confusion notwithstanding (and we will clear it up, I promise), bear in mind that the I-3 calls for vectors to final. The full ILS procedure is not done until the I-6.

Alright, all cleared up. Pierre, the parallel hold entry was the right choice, and you flew it correctly.

The only issue, as I mentioned above, is that the rating calls for vectors to final, not the full approach, but it's not a critical item.

Yup, Keith and I spoke about it and came to the conclusion that I'm an idiot. ;)

Sorry for the confusion!

Hi Keith and Ryan,

Keith, my first message was my own interpretation of the explanation given verbally by Ryan. His writen clarification here made it clear that he was really not expecting me to turn right at Silex. My error here not understanding exactly what he was explaining.

I also didn't understood that by requesting Silex instead of vectors, I was departing from I3 scenario. As a matter of fact, I was still reading the plate and preparing my radio and instrument so I choose Silex just to have some more time to be fully ready for the approach. i just selected the option giving me one minute more to prepare.

Then my Gps calling for a hold entry did caught me off guard as I was really not expecting that. I was really more in a mindset to do a right turn so I hesitated then went for the hold. That is why when Ryan mentionned something about a right turn I immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion about what he was explaining to me.

Ryan, don't be too harsh on you, this happens in real world also and the pilot job is to be confident enough about the procedure so he can ask immediately clarification to the controller. I'm clearly not at this level yet and this flight brought it's fair share of new experience and unexpected decision making process.

i did learn a lot from our exchange here and that is what PE is all about for me.

Thanks guy.

Pierre

No worries, Pierre. It was more or less a misunderstanding on my part.

What a great read, I had to go pull out my App chart for the ILS for Rwy 8 to follow along :)

Assuming the pilot is on SMO311R outbound, they would make a left turn reaching SILEX, fly a PARALLEL entry.... so fly away from silex on the IBUR localizer, make a standard rate left hand turn (after 1 minute) to about a 040 until established inbound on the localizer.

Teardrop turn doesn't make sense because you would be turning steeper than if you did a parallel entry.

Note: While parallel may seem odd (because you're making an initial left turn after silex), if you were to hold at SILEX you'd make right hand turns once you enter the hold... so you'd be good!

EDIT: Ooh, apparently I missed page 2 of this mystery!!!
