OK.... I do have to admit that it did take four attempts before I did this flight without huge glaring errors. But, in theory, the DP instructions are not that hard (IMO). No harder than say the IDLEWILD climb on JFK1. With the exception that in my case it always seems like the tower to departure radio call happens just before the HSI swings signaling the crossing of LAX315R (waypoint occurs quickly after take off during a time of high pilot work load).

Again. Some of my questions were to help me learn how to create better flight plans. In my twisted mind, "better" means they don't require re-work by ATC.

Secondary goal is to improve my ability to "get it right the 1st time" when ATC reads complicated clearances over the radio. To that end, having a reliable short hand method to record routing is important.

Question. Does right turn to 250 with no delay mean "no auto pilot turns"? Is any turn anticipation allowed in this circumstance?

Slightly different topic. Is it really possible to fly the PEEER1 DP without GPS? My thinking is the answer is no. Why? Check out the note on the SID.

NOTE: all aircraft expect radar vectors to SILEX or VALEY prior to SADDE.

While it's possible to navigate to SADDE via V299 using VOR, getting to VALEY or SILEX is a different matter. Doesn't ATC have the expectation that the pilot is able to comply with the entire procedure when it's filed and cleared?

Does anyone have a thought on HOW to fly the PEEER1 DP? Since the turn from 210 to 255 isn't a named intersection won't the GPS draw a straight line from the airport to PEEER? If so the HSI would normally show the deviation from that line (not the 255 course).

My only thought is to use the direct-to PEEER and fly the 210 heading until the RMI needle reads almost 255. Then turn direct PEEER. Am I missing something?

The PEEER1 departure is an RNAV procedure; in other words, it requires GPS or some other form of aRea NAVigation.

When you load the procedure on your GPS, the first waypoint will be PEEER with a DTK of 255º. That means your GPS will act as if PEEER is a VOR and you're tuned to the 255º radial. Knowing that, hopefully the answer is obvious: you fly heading 210 (which is runway heading, more or less) until the CDI centers, then turn right and intercept the course.

If your GPS does not have the procedure in its database, you can use "OBS mode"--a GPS mode that allows you to select a specific course to a waypoint. But that might not be legal: as I understand it, in order to fly an RNAV SID, you must load the procedure by name from your GPS database. You are not allowed to manually enter the waypoints.
