wmburns, hopefully your confusion regarding when to start executing lost comms has been resolved.
Regarding using a non-certified device, from a practical standpoint, whether you go direct MUSEL with a non-approved GPS or you stay on the initial heading until joining SXC R-061 inbound, they're going to give you a wide berth in terms of traffic separation. The difference between the two is only a handful of miles over the water, so don't fret too much over which one to do.
