It's a debatable point, but I think it was easier to get a picture of what was going on when we did hear all the pilots talking to whichever controller we were logged in with. I "heard" a lot of silence tonight, and it was often tricky to get a feel for whether the controller had actually heard or taken notice of my transmission.
I understand Keith's points, but it is interesting to note that I am not alone in wondering about this.

Oh it was definitely easier to get the picture with repeaters on all frequencies, no argument there. Hearing silence is exceedingly common in the real world, btw.
The reality is that the number of calls you initiate with ATC once you're talking with approach/center is relatively few compared to clearance, ground or tower.

Agreed, Keith. The "problem" is really only apparent when the network gets crowded.
