So I am almost done with the Cat program, 2 more to go. I just started looking at the IFR training workshops now. So I was wondering if I could practice ILS appraoches knowing that I understand approach plates and know how the instruments work. I have hear that VFR pilots start to practice IFR approaches before doing a IFR rating. That all said would I ask tower if I could use the ILS approach? I am doing that anyway on my own during a base approach only to help line up the runway even though I see the runway and approach lights.

Advise the first controller you speak to on the ground that you are wanting to depart for “VFR Practice instrument approaches”. Some fields will give you special instructions... some won’t.

Then advise the approach controller for that airport once airborne.

If you are flying to the airport and not already there, just advise the approach controller for that field that you would like them.
