and to add to what Keith has said, if you're not with the tower by 5 miles from the airport, that's the point where you should nudge the controller. I sometimes see pilots who wait until they are less than 2 miles. There's never a case where we want to wait that long.

Good point, JX. I have had a tendency to wait too long and am going to change that.
