Relating to the original post and freedom to pick an altitude, when I have been assigned an altitude restriction and the controller is ready to free me up again, I've heard "resume appropriate VFR altitudes" sometimes, "altitude pilot's discretion" sometimes, and "delete altitude restriction" other times. I also hear pilots occasionally calling in to verify whether ATC still wants the altitude restriction - I think that's a reasonable tactic if you think you've been forgotten or otherwise are in doubt.
