This is a fantastic next step!

Flight training is, to avoid a $20,000 price tag, just the basics. A LOT of learning happens after you have a certificate in your wallet, hence the 'This is a license to learn' speech you get when the examiner hands you your ticket!

These ratings provide an amazing opportunity for new flight students, as well as rated pilots who don't get a chance to fly much, to pick up some of those 'learning experiences' without cost or risk.

Time to write an article for my flying club newsletter... Spread the gospel a bit!

And as for the San Diego question...

I learned to fly out of KSEE. It's one of the flight training capitals of the world, for a few reasons.

The airspace is diverse, as you eluded to. All airspace types are represented. If you learn here, you will NOT be shy on the radio! The weather is also favorable much of the time, except you don't get much actual instrument.

As a result, both the oral exams I've taken so far were over four hours long. It took 20 hours for me to solo, because I had to be comfortable in the airspace. I'd have soloed in 15 elsewhere, as I was comfortable flying.

One question, for sport pilot (Flew it in a Sport Cruiser) out of Gillespie, was:

"What airspace are we under"

Delta was my answer.

"And..." she prompted.

"Bravo starts at 4800"

"What's between the two?"

"So... GL-2400 is D
E from there to 4800.
B from there to 10,000
E from there to 18,000
A from 18,000 to FL600
E above that to space."

Ugh. Can't wait for my Instrument ride here... :-P
