The resolution of your desktop doesn't have much impact on VRAM. What impacts VRAM is the number of textures loaded into the video card, the resolution of those textures, and the poly count of the geometry being loaded into the card.

Again, it depends on what you mean by "High" settings. There isn't a nice single slider that defines "High".

Running at less than then monitor's native resolution will reduce the graphical fidelity drastically. There are much better ways to improve frame rates. For a long time, I used a GTX760 2GB. I could squeeze 20-30 FPS out in busy areas at 1080p, but I couldn't use max texture resolutions, have maximum autogen, or global shadows.

There is a nice article on the X-Plane site that gives a basic overview of the rendering options available: http://www.x-plane.com/?article=configu ... ng-options

Thanks to everyone who has replied and tried to help me. Ok, I have narrowed it down to 2 pcs.

The 1st has a better cpu but a worse cpu. The second has a better gpu but a worse cpu. Please could someone please tell me which will run x-plane 10 at higher settings with at least 30 fps? Cheers. The second pc's gpu has 4g of vram. :D

I have decided to get the vibox as it has better overall specs. My friend also said this:

The only thing the vibox is lower on is vram but it doesn't matter because it will still perform better because VRAM is used to boost the normal ram and the vibox has 2gb of VRAM and 16gb of ram (adding up to 18gb total usable ram) but the one on e-buyer yes it has 4gb of VRAM but it only has 12 ram (adding up to 16gb total usable ram) so the vibox is all round better for ram too and by the looks of it all round better for everything

VRAM is just added to normal ram so think of it as vibox has 18gb of all round ram and te e-buyer one has 16gb of all round ram

Unfortunately, your friend has no clue how video RAM works, and has given you terrible advice.

VRAM is used for storing textures. Regular RAM is not (until you run out of VRAM, but it's considerably slower).

By going with less VRAM you are limiting the amount and quality of high resolution textures your sim can load.

It's not the end of the world (my card also only has 2GB and I get on alright) but it's a shame since you're investing in a new computer.

Also, regular RAM is cheap and easily added to a system, whereas VRAM Is soldered directly into the video card. So you could've upgraded the 12GB quite easily.

Too late to cancel?

+1 to Tim. VRAM was explained in an earlier post. VRAM and RAM, too very different things. I've never once heard anyone add VRAM + RAM and compare the 'total RAM' of two systems. They serve very different purposes.

So would the 2nd PC (not the vibox PC) be a better buy? It has a worse PSU and CPU though. Cheers again

ALSO 1K IS MY LIMIT.

Of the two PCs posted, I would choose the Zoostorm. The SSD and better card make up for the CPU. As far as the PSU goes, I'd hope these prebuilt systems have been tested enough to know that the PSU is good enough.

Cheers pieces. The main thing is I was wondering was if the Intel Core i7-4790 will give similar performance to the i7 4970k. Also, I don't think ebuyer would sell a pc, especially for that price, with a psu that isn't good enough to power all the components. :D
Zoostorm is owned by a company called CMS Computers which is one of the largest manufacturers of PC's in the UK.
