I came across this in the VATSIM forums. Given the audience that we have here, I thought it would be relevant to share the link here and encourage pilots to complete the survey if they have time to do so.

I'm going to contact the survey author to ask him to consider PE to the list of network choices, but for now, feel free to use the 'other' option and specify "PilotEdge".

He asks some reasonable questions there. One piece of feedback I had for him, though, was to distinguish between unsupervised at-home use of a PC-based sim (certified or otherwise) from the use of a similar device with a CFI present. The answers might be skewed based on the assumptions that people might make either way.
Hi everyone! As a part of the IB diploma program I take at my school I have to write an 'Extended Essay' (essentially a research paper) on a topic of my choice...so of course that choice would be something aviation related :)

I am researching the application of flight sims and online networks like VATSIM in real world private pilot training. More specifically, my research question is: "To what extent can experience in realistic online flight simulations assist in training new private pilot students in the United States?"

My experience here on VATSIM tells me there's a wealth of knowledge to be had from you fellow pilots, virtual and real-world alike  So I'd like to tap into some of that wisdom and get your takes.

I have compiled a survey that I'd really appreciate as many people as possible filling out. It should take no more than 20-30 minutes if you're nice and want to give me comments in addition to the multiple choice responses it is based on.

Anyone who flies in some kind of flight simulator can take this survey; there are additional questions for online network users and real world pilots.
