I-01 Direct seal beach?

I'm having a little trouble understanding how to begin the KSNA 19R ILS approach for the I-01 rating. After contacting departure, I should hear something like:

"LAX_DEP: Chinook 301 turn right heading 340, proceed direct Seal Beach when able"

So which is it? Heading 340 or direct SLI? Am I supposed to turn to 340, level out, then reassess what heading would take me to SLI or just stick to 340 and hope my turn was perfect?

The controller needs to get you going in the general direction of SLI (that's why it's the 340 hdg), and then when you are able to pick up the SLI VOR, you go direct to it (hence "when able").

If you have the capability to instantly go direct then do it.

Thanks guys, that seems to make sense. I've been under the impression that, in IFR flight, you must adhere strictly to a path. I was always taught if a controller gives you a heading then you have to stick to it until you hear another one - but that was with only a few hours of hood time.

Colin, if the controller only gave a heading, you would be bang on.

In this case, you have two instructions to follow in sequence. That happens frequently in ifr flight for reasons of efficiency.

And to think I could be paying $175/hr to learn this. 8-) I'm going to crank up the fog and try it out sometime this week.
