Practicing writing/reading back clearances

I just started my IFR training in real life, and I was told that my next lesson was just practicing writing down clearances. In the real world and in sim, if you file, then call up for a clearances, but don't take off, does that activate SAR, or is your flight plan just considered not activated? I'm just wondering if I can call up, say 3 times in an hour, just to practice writing down and reading back clearances, and then not bother with the flight. I don't know enough to do a legit full IFR flight yet, as all of my 3-4 hours of IFR training has consisted of compass/timed turns and flying by instrument reference.

If you never take off from a towered airport, SAR won't be an issue.

Feel free to pick up as many clearances as you like for practice. That's a scenario we promote every time we talk to the media.

Enjoy!

Awesome. You guys are going to take a lot of my 20 dollar bills as I just break into my IFR training!

You could practice writing down other peoples clearances, both on PE as well as real traffic (there are a few sites where live airport audio is available) i am working on a standard shorthand to use, really just better abbreviations for things like 'direct to' or other phrases used in a clearance. Still getting used to writing on my tablet too.

That's very true, but there is a certain level of mic fright associated with reading back the clearance on air. That's where practicing on PE comes into its own. You could certainly utilize our ATC recordings or a site like liveatc.net and their archives, too.
