Gentlemen , take a look at the Skyvector

I am instructed : on departure fly runway heading ( RWY 16L at VNY) , stay clear of Burbank Class C until contacted SoCal.

Lets say, I do not have GPS or moving map, only NDB and VOR receivers.

Questions:

1. What happens if I fly runway heading and do not establish contact with Socal? If I keep flying further that 5 miles, I have to be below 2500 not to bust Class B, correct?

2. I know I need to make my left turn somewhere, how do I navigate to my next waypoint VPLRB? I know my turn will depend on how long I fly runway heading. What navigational sources do I use?

I know that in real life there would be a lot of landmarks depicted on the chart but X-Plane does not have it.

You can get your initial left turn by watching for an appropriate radial from the POM VOR. R-262 looks like it would work. If you turn left and fly that radial, you'll skirt the edge of the Charlie, but be outside of it, and you'll also skirt the edge of the Bravo, but be outside of it. That particular radial take you almost directly over El Monte aiport -- but I'd probably just go direct POM at 6500' and then resume your route.

AJ, for the part of the Bravo that you could potentially go into (before your initial left turn), it looks to me like the floor is 5000 ft, not 2500.

Also, couldn't you use your DME (assuming you fly rwy heading)? Anything over 6nm means you could potentially be in the Bravo, depending on altitude - and you'd better start turning left. But without a GPS, navigating around the Bravo and then the Charlie's on this route would be one exciting ride!

Cyrus, yes, you are right about B shelf, I think I have meant the adjacent area while posting. DME is a good idea.
It is so hard to get rid of the moving map display since it is available and I am using it but at least I try to figure out how to navigate if I did not have moving map or GPS.
Boy, there is so many things I would like to do on PE but not enough time.
First of all, I would like to practice flights without moving map or GPS assistance, just by having VOR , NDB and DME and of course sectionals.

Yes, I meant 5500'. I've been flying west too often.

I'm also trying to master using the two OBS's (against two VOR's) to find intersections.

But I know exactly what you mean. It sure feels like I'm naked/vulnerable without the moving map.

Glad to hear people are trying to fly without GPS. That's when you truly become proficient with CDI interpretation (tracking VORs) and pilotage.
