Taxi Speed Limit on PE

Post by ChristophPreinfalk »

How fast can I taxi while on PE without getting busted? :-)

I think in real world in the USA it's like 20knots unless stated otherwise, but I saw Keith taxi faster than that on at least one of the instructional videos.

I'd think that the common sense rule on PE would be that it doesn't matter as long as there's noone else taxiing at the same airport at the same time, and as long as I don't take off while taxiing. After all it's a safety rule, and it will make no difference to the controllers if I take my sweet time or if I get to the runway very quickly. But then again, if I taxi with 40 knots it's unrealistic, and we're trying to simulate reality here.

The reason why I'm asking is that taxiing is the only boring part of the flight and I was wondering if I can shorten that time a bit ... :-)

Go as fast as you like, just know that if you get there SUPER fast, we might not have your IFR release ready for you when you get to the runway.

There is no speed limit in the US that I'm aware of. I've hit 40kts during the taxi at JFK before (r/w)....I had close to 2nm of taxiing to do.

I must be weird, I like taxiing - the challenge of constantly shuffling the pedals to stay on centerline is fun.

Ha! Interesting. That's great. Thank you! And all these flights on PE I was staring at the GPS speed, trying my best to stay below 20kts during taxi. What a sucker! :-)

I don't have pedals, I'm using a joystick with twist for rudder, I think I would enjoy the realism of pedals if I had them ... My setup is in the living room and my wife would probably not appreciate at all if I add flight hardware ... :-)

Even with my RC planes (r/w) it happens some time that I fly a few feet instead of taxiing. :-)

Does keeping only 2 wheels out of three on the ground (nose wheel up) constitute taxiing?....LOL!!

For large transport aircraft, 20 knts is the usual limit when taxiing straight ahead, and 10 knts for 90 deg turns, but this is guided by tire damage/wear issues as well as inertia and ability to stop.

For the little guys like most of us here, that doesn't much apply. That said, many an instructor will stomp on the brakes on you, if you are moving much more than a walking pace.

Precisely why I don't have rudder pedals in the right seat of my airplane.

"Stomp away, my friend, stomp away." :)

"Safe" taxi speeds vary wildly based on aircraft type, weather, congestion, and more. 40kts at Lincoln Park would be an unmitigated disaster. At JFK, it felt like I wasn't moving.

Something tells me my personal version of high-speed taxiing would get ya in trouble. My favorite way to practice minimum controllable airspeed is h-s taxiing. I taxi around the airport about 10 feet off the ground, at absolute minimum airspeed with full flaps. Really great way to practice. After a while you can put down in parking lots, yards, even a few of the bigger hangars. If you did it right, its possible no one would notice other than a slight discrepency in altitude. You can mush a c172 all over the place @ 54kias.
