KCNO to KHHR TEC route question

When I looked up the TEC route for KCNO to KHHR, I found PDZ PDZ270R HHR RY25 LOC on MyFlightRoute. I'm flying a C172/U with two NAV radios. My question is this: how does the PDZ 270 radial get me to Hawthorne? POWUP is an initial approach fix for the LOC RWY 25 approach, but the 270 radial off of PDZ doesn't get me anywhere near there - it sends me too far to the north.

What am I missing?

Hi Doug,

The route assumes that you will actually fly the PDZ270R from above PDZ until you intercept the HHR Rwy 25 Localizer. PDZ itself is slightly south of the HHR Rwy 25 LOC and tracking the PDZ270R will allow you to intercept the HHR LOC Rwy 25 final approach course just fine.

Perhaps it means 'KCNO to PDZ, then fly the PDZ R-270 until you intercept the HHR LOC 25, then fly towards HHR on the localizer'? That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

EDIT: Julio beat me to it :-)

Thanks for the suggestions - since I hadn't flown on PE for awhile, I was updating my software last night and wanted to try it out before getting on the network, so I tried this flight just in the sim, not on the network. The problem I ran into was that by the time the RWY 25 localizer came in to the NAV radio, the needle was pegged to the left (i.e. I was north of the localizer course of 253). To reintercept the localizer, I would have to turn quite a bit left - since this was an experiment, not in actual IFR, I tried it, turning left to 225 to try to reintercept. I did *eventually* reintercept that way, but only around the WELLZ intersection, by which point I should have been down to 2700.

I know ATC wouldn't want a pilot just wandering about like that, which is why I'm confused!

I wondered about this myself. If you're flying FSX, you won't receive the localizer until about 27-28 miles from the transmitter. This is different (by a lot) from real-life. As it happens, PDZ is about 35 miles from HHR, so you will not be able to receive the localizer to perform the intercept. That effectively makes this TEC route unflyable for FSX simmers.

It just makes it a more worthwhile exercise if it's flown on PE, instead of offline :)

It ATC sees you going through the localizer, they'll give you a reasonable heading to maintain until you're receiving it.

I knew I was doing something wrong - this one's relatively easy to fix! :)
