Four really basic and quick questions:

(1) When I get 'frequency change approved' from the controller, what do I respond? Just 'roger'?

(2) Leaving a class D airport into uncontrolled airspace: If the controller does not come back to me with 'frequency change approved', may I leave the frequency anyway, or do I need go inform the controller (with something like 'request frequency change')?

(3) When I get wind information from the controller when on the final, what do I respond? Just 'roger'? (I know I don't have to readback the information at least.)

(4) After landing at a controlled airport I leave the runway, and so far I have been contacted automatically by the Tower with taxi instructions. But if they forget me, shall I just switch to Ground and ask for instructions (without saying "goodbye" to the Tower first)?

This is what I would do but I would bow to greater knowledge out there

1. acknowledge with abbreviated c/s
2. If you have definitely left the "D" you are no longer under their control. I would just say "c/s changing to #### (freq)"
3. Wind info on final usually comes with landing clearance so just ack. the landing clearance. I there is an update to the wind whilst on final just ack with c/s
4. After leaving the rw cross the hold short point, stop, "c/s holding at "C" (or whatever) req. taxi to parking" they will either give you taxi info or tell you to contact Ground.

Hi Mats,

Here are the answers to your questions:

1. Think of this saying as a salutation (i.e., Goodbye) and a courtesy to let you know you are no longer required to stay on frequency. Responding with "Roger" or "Good day" or any other derivative is acceptable. AIM 4-2-3:

Acknowledge with your aircraft identification, either at the beginning or at the end of your transmission, and one of the words “Wilco,” “Roger,” “Affirmative,” “Negative,” or other appropriate remarks; e.g., “PIPER TWO ONE FOUR LIMA, ROGER.” If you have been receiving services; e.g., VFR traffic advisories and you are leaving the area or changing frequencies, advise the ATC facility and terminate contact.

2. Assuming you are not under radar contact (i.e., you are departing a Class D airport with negative flight following), as soon as you are clear of the Class D airspace you may switch frequencies on your own.

3. If the controller uses your callsign in the transmission, you must respond as per the AIM. A simple "Roger" will suffice, but remember to include your callsign. If you just hear the wind, with no specific direction to you, then you do not have to say or readback anything.

4. Directly from AIM 4-3-13:

A pilot who has just landed should not change from the tower frequency to the ground control frequency until directed to do so by the controller.

If you haven't been contacted by Tower about what to do after landing, simply hold short of the runway making sure you've moved your aircraft passed the hold short lines and await further instruction. It is perfectly fine to contact Tower with a request for parking, but do not move on a movement area (i.e. taxiway or runway) or switch frequencies without receiving permission to do so.
