Maybe a daft question, but after you land at a controlled airport, do you need to get a taxi clearance as soon as you exit the runway? or if atc remain silent do you just taxi on to a suitable spot? Would you call something like "San Louis tower, N969FL clear of runway request taxi to parking" ? Or is that overkill for vfr?

See the AIM section on exiting the runways. http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publicat ... 03.html.21 Specifically 4-3-20.

Don't go anywhere without a clearance...

You are legal to exit the runway and move forward to clear the hold short lines, even if it puts you on another movement area like a taxiway or apron, but you cannot cross another runway while exiting without ATC clearance.

Since PE controllers work a lot of airspace I'll typically say "John Wayne tower, legacy 41VR clearing at M" meaning hint hint give me taxi instructions so I don't have to stop.
