the other night I just wanted to fly around from the airport and do some sight seeing. I contacted ground and asked for taxi VFR departure to the south...they asked me to contact clearance and wanted a destination.

Whats the rule on how to contact when I just want to cruise around? I know I will have to contact socal departure, approach, etc...to get clearance into different airspaces but I just want to fly around endlessly and enjoy the wonderful sights!!!

You don't have to give a destination but ATC will generally ask for one to ensure we route you in the correct direction.

Just a "no specific destination we'll be sight seeing to the XXX" will work. You will need to contact clearance delivery at Class C/B airports in this case.
