V2 Charlies

Hey guys,

Just got my account a few days ago, so I apologize if this is a stupid question in advance...... During my practice flight for the v2, I got handed off to Socal departure on 127.2 shortly after departing KSNA on a 330 heading. When I made my call in, no response - I checked my frequency and tried again. The second time, it seems to have got through or something, and he said to resume own nav, etc..... By the time I turned northbound at the big mountains and was approaching Chino, I still had not gotten the transfer to Approach (this was my second practice run, and my 4th or so flight on the network). My question is did I bust the outer shelf of Charlie airspace by not being on Approach? I called in just outside and said "Stationair 53F approaching Chino", and only got a "53F roger" in response. Its my understanding that flight following implies that airspace that it would be plausible for you to go through will be handled behind the scenes by the controllers. By being in two way communications with Departure, does that constitute 2 way coms with the controlling agency for KONT? I would imagine that Approach handles that airspace, since its the outer shelf for Ontario. I called in later and said that I had the field (Ontario) in site, and got handed right to tower. I did notice that the controller seemed to be trying to catch up, since I caught the phrase "well I think I screwed everything up". I'm pretty sure the approach and departure were the same person, but if they weren't, and I was handed off to tower in the inner shelf, would that count as two way coms?

Sorry for rambling :)

The VFR departure instructions you are issued out of SNA are designed to ensure you do not enter the shelf area of the Class C airspace until authorized by departure. In the absence of two-way communication with SOCAL approach, remain outside the Class C shelf area. I'm not sure what happened on your flight with regard to the SOCAL approach communication, however.
