Retaking exams...

I've seen two approaches (no pun intended) to taking the exams. First is to keep taking them over until you get it right. Second, an my preferred method, is to do copious amounts of studying and attempting practice flights before trying for the exam in hopes to get a pass on the first try.
My question is, is there a limit to the frequency at which you can retake exams? As an extreme example, if I took my V-3 and failed due to a stupid oversight, could I go back to John Wayne right away armed with that knowledge and just try again immediately?
I ask because I've been tight on time this week and haven't had time to practice but I have been studying the V-3 in such great detail that I'm actually feeling really confident I could pass on my first try. I know enough not to bust the Bravo and where the shelves are. But if I fail, I'd like to come back after a break and try again the same evening while it's all fresh in my mind.
