Pilot/controller question frequency

Post by cbarnesATC »

If this has been suggested before I apologize. I was wondering if anyone would think it would be beneficial to designate some frequency to act as sort of a live Q&A between a pilot & controller. Like a debrief after a flight if something happens that the pilot doesn't understand. And this could be anything from the time they call for a clearance to the time they taxi off the runway and shut down. Could be anything - Procedures, phraseology, or "hey I flew this same thing yesterday and the controller had me do this but today you had me do that", or even "hey I want to make sure I understand this before I do it", etc... The pilot, after he lands, could ask the controller "hey do you have a minute I have a question". I understand that sometimes it's just one controller on duty so it might not be a good idea @ that particular time but this is just an off the wall suggestion with no real specifics. :)

I completely understand that sometimes the controller isn't busy and if a user does something different than instructed they are educated so they understand whats going on. We're all here to learn right? And that works great; everyone is happy. But even then I can tell that the controllers are trying to be as professional as possible (they always are here; I wish the guys at my tower were this way :D ) and try to get their explanation across as quickly as possible. This frequency could allow the controller and pilot to simply have a conversation outside of the normal ATC frequencies.

I've always wished we had something like this in the real world. My airport sees a fair amount of training traffic. When I ask an aircraft to do something and I see they do the complete opposite or they come back and ask me to clarify it would be nice to fix it as best as possible immediately then be able to explain it to them in more detail after the fact without getting them scared half to death if I ask them to call the facility.

I hope this makes sense. Happy flying!

The controllers are not trained instructors and much of the time, they don't have the bandwidth to do this because of their controlling duties.

I would think that the closest thing we could offer to this on a reliable basis would be the upcoming launch of the remote coaching service. This is next on the list now that Real World IFR has been launched.

Makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to read. Looking forward to the upcoming features.

For what it's worth there's an irc channel on freenode where people might answer any questions you had in case you don't want to create a new topic every time there's a quick question how should you have acted in that situation. At least this is where I drop my questions :)

Olive Branch (MS) Tower teams up with FAAST to put on an annual safety topic / Q&A session. Works great here, and there's always a huge turnout! Give your local FAAST rep a call!

Have driven by there many times and looked "up" at CRW from the interstate. One of these days I'm going to land there for no other reason then being able to write "Yeager" in my log book :)
