ATC Channels

Sorry if this is covered by a different post, but I have looked on here for a while and was unable to find any that provided this information. For those that aren't aware (and couldn't gather by the post), I am new to PE. I have only been using it for a couple days and finally got the kinks worked out (I think). I attempted a flight earlier today from KWJF to KOXR (Gen Fox to Oxnard) and used Fore Flight to get the frequencies for these airports. I switched to 121.7 which is listed as the tower for Fox field but could hear that it was an arrival/departure channel on your system. I then switched to 120.3 which is listed as ground for Fox field and noticed the same thing. Due to the range that I was at when trying to speak to them I was unable to transmit to them.
What I am hoping to find out is two things; first does PE only support certain towered airfields in the coverage area. Second, does PE provide a list of frequencies that they do support anywhere. Looking at the VFR and IFR ratings that are on here I believe that certain airports do have tower controllers, but I have searched the website and forum for this information to no avail. I am from southern Florida and a current pilot. I am trying to get my instructors ratings and signed up to use PE as a simulator training for myself and hopefully my future students. Flying in Florida I don't usually have to worry about MEA's or MOCA's since there is no significant elevation that could get in the way. I would like to continue using this software, but am finding it difficult to learn how at the beginning. Keith has been wonderful at tech support but I don't want to keep bothering him if it can be avoided.
Any assistance would be appreciated,
Lurch

I was controlling earlier today and I do recall an aircraft on those frequencies, but I never heard a transmission from that aircraft.
We support all towered airports within the coverage area and the frequencies you list are valid and will work assuming everything is set up correctly.
From your message it sound like you could hear us but couldn't transmit to us. How are you triggering your PTT? Additionally what simulator software/OS are you using?

The controller was likely working all positions, from clearance to center. In that case, call up and find out - they'll correct you if your wrong. If its a client issue, the controller will be able to tell (thy have a bar at the bottom showing what frequency everyone is on). Seeing as Keith is most likely going to give a long and detailed reply to this post anyways, don't be afraid to ask questions - he's used to it

! The best place for tech support is here or via email. No - every towered field in the coverage area is "covered", excluding military bases. If its a joint military-civilian airport (i.e. you can land there in your 172 and not have a F-16 behind you), then its also covered. Places like Edwards are not. The one exception I can think of is KNUC, San Clemente, which is treated as an untowered airport at PE. Could you elaborate on "unable to transmit"?What sim are you using? In X-Plane, the default "talk to ATC" option is used as PTT.
Agh, Peter beat me...
Edited to clear up points brought up by Keith.

Regarding how to trouble shoot voice problems. One trick is to load/run the PilotEdge receiver on a different PC and use to monitor all frequencies. This will give you a way to verify that when requesting a "radio check" is actually being heard. Use the PE live map to verify that the frequency that you have dialed matches what the server "thinks". Be sure you are on the ground in a non-movement area.
Even better is to have someone near you to listen to the PE receiver while you are requesting a radio check.

Nelson,
be careful, there is a lot of confusion your post might create.
123.25 is not a chat frequency, but we do use 123.45 for pre arranged tech support sometimes.
the voice isolation logic change was implemented. it doesn't effect atc range.
if you try to call sfo clearance while you are at SAN, ATC will not hear you, even if you are hearing other pilots.

Ah... whoops - got voice isolation and range "isolation" mixed up... If range isolation hasn't been implemented, I'm assuming that the "range" part of it was at least somewhat included in the voice isolation (if that made sense)? How else would you not be able to get to SFO clearance? Then again, that's probably proprietary and the secret is hidden in a secret compartment somewhere...

Thanks for all the answers, I will try to answer the questions that you have asked, but if I miss one sorry. I am using fsx as simulator for now. I still have the default scroll lock as my transmit key for PE. I know that on fsx this button also brings up the atc window by default but I have changed that. By not being able to transmit I mean to say that for some reason no one can hear me. I am not sure if that is on my end or not...
I was at the main menu of fsx and pressed scroll lock to request a radio check. I was advised that I was "loud and clear" by someone monitoring the channel. I then started the sim and attempted to contact ground for the airport I was at. I did not receive a response. I then proceeded as if it were a non-towered airport and taxi'd over the active. I changed to tower and same thing, no answer. (P.S. I know I probably shouldnt have continued without coms, but I was uder the impression my coms worked and the frequency was different). I took off and attempted to contact departure on the frequency listed on ForeFlight, and at this time I realized that no one could hear me.

Hearing someone while on the main menu of flight sim is actually abnormal as far as I know, but I'll have to leave that part for Keith for a definite answer.
However, assuming that you did do a successful radio check, what airport where you at where you couldn't hear anyone?

I was on the ground and air near KWJF (Gen Fox). I stayed in that area since I could not speak with anyone, and didnt want to break too many rules this soon... lol jk

Can I have you E-mail
support@pilotedge.net with a copy paste of your last post describing the problem. I'd rather not go through the next troubleshooting steps in a public place.
