JAR A320 Waypoints

Looking for some help from those that fly the JAR A320.

I am teaching myself how to fly the larger planes but ran into an issue with the A320. I put the SID/STAR in the FMS and go fly. All of the points seem to be treated as fly over points and the FMS never anticipates a turn. This creates some pretty crazy turning by the auto pilot. If I hand flying it I can anticipate and the FMS still sequences.

I have also tried their Beta versions that fix some other wacky FMS issues as well but not this one.

For reference I am also messing around with the FF757 and it anticipates the points and course changes so that plane works great this far.

Wanting to start trying this thing on the network, but not sure I want my hind end handed to me at the first turn when the controler wants to know why I swung it out five miles and heading back on course. :).

Thanks!!!

Unfortunately that's just how it is with the JAR. This is one of those issues that sucks for those of us that fly online, but likely won't be addressed until he does an overhaul of the FMS.

FWIW the only time I've been yelled at when using the AP was following a "direct to" instruction. My plane set a turn and a course that it could not maintain so it overshot and tried to get back "on course" which made it appear that I was going to collide with some parallel traffic. There are plenty of guys that are flying both this and the A330 and I've never heard anyone get fussed at because a waypoint was supposed to be a "fly by" and the AP treated it like a "fly over". Your mileage may vary.

Awesome thanks, yeah I knew you and Josh flew these things a lot. Appreciate it. Probably give it a go on the network this weekend now that I have all the systems worked out.

As Ty mentioned, I haven't been yelled at by ATC when the A320 does the goofy navigation. You should be good to go. I have noticed the recent beta version handles it a little better.

The recent beta is better, however not perfect. I always "back it up" by iFMC which handles this better, can provide a guidance during a go around and usually doesn't screw up approach procedures. Although I understand that modelling a FMGS takes really a lot of time and effort, they could do it better.

BTW instead of making some impossible turns during direct-to, you can always switch the autopilot to a heading mode. Probably not very realistic in an Airbus, but possible.

This is what I do now on most of my direct-tos :).

Direct to - As mentioned above....go heading mode until you are pointed at the waypoint you want to go to....then insert the direct and you won't get the overshoot S turns trying to pick up the Lnav.

I've had really good success with the MCDU recently in both the 320 and 330. Key is to program all the Lnav first (step it to make sure no discons), then program all your Vnav....i.e. cruise alt and performance. The MCDU will then fly all the speed and altitude restrictions in managed mode.
Cheers,
Josh
