Hi all,
I have a quick question about STAR's and how to choose them. I fly an older non GPS equipped 737-200, so how do I determine when choosing the arrival STAR, which one I can fly? I was told by a controller when flying into KLAS i was on an RNAV only STAR. opps :?: Thanks for the help

Choose a STAR based upon your aircraft type, navigation equipment and route of flight. Obviously you can not pick an RNAV procedure when the airplane is not RNAV capable (slant alpha). If for example the chart states that DME equipment is required then your aircraft needs to have DME available.

In the same way it wouldn't work to request a piston/turbo-prop only STAR when flying a jet (or the other way around).

There are TONS of SID/STAR's that can be flown with either GPS or VOR navigation equipment. Note on the chart that many waypoints are identified with VOR radials and DME or by the intersection of VOR radials.

Do you have any destination in mind to use as an example?

Another way to get ideas for valid flight plans is to search PEaware.pilotedge.net using the city pair in question. Then look for a similar aircraft with similar navigation gear. Using Skyvector.com is one resource to pull up all of the available SID/STAR. Then rule out the ones that don't apply to your aircraft or navigation equipment. If the STAR has RNAV in the name it won't apply to you.

But CLARR TWO, CRESSO THREE, FUZZY SEVEN, KADDY ONE, and LUXOR TWO could all be flown in a slant alpha jet into KLAS.

Obviously some of the above won't apply based upon the direction of flight.

Skyvector is a great resource for charts. And often it is necessary to read all of the available charts to determine which is correct for your flight.

You look at the chart and see what equipment it requires.

"RNAV required"
"DME required"
NOTE: Turboprop only

...so on and so forth.
