Clearance clarification Use of the word "direct"

Can someone clarify this for me as it is a bit confusing
I tend to get a bit confused by the term "direct" in a clearance routing
for example
Cleared to the Palomar Airport via fly hdg 175, vectors V23, OCN, direct, maintain 5000, expect 7000 5 mins after departure, departure freqency 121.30, squawk 1312"
My questions:
I would to see the word "direct" after the routing and think that it means that once I have past OCN the routing would be to fly direct from the VOR ( or a the stated fix ) . to Palomar . Is that the correct interpretation? Further , once passed OCN and if I received no further instruction from atc I would follow the direct routing to the clearance point in this case the airport...
Please clarify or correct me..
Thank you
