****UPDATE- it all came in the mail today.
And so... It begins...
(I have one more monitor but didn't feel like getting it out and can't use it anyway until I purchase another cable later on. Hope to have 4 monitors in the end)

Going from a late 2009 27" iMac with only a 512mb GPU... Time is finally here to build my own rig.

I had a budget... I went beyond it a bit but I am happy with what I got so far. I have very specific needs (not just sim) so it is built to last and provide.

First set came in today. Expecting the rest over the next week.

Kyle - I think you'll be very happy with that! Nice rig. I built mine last summer and it's very close except 4790K on a Z97 1150 MB (wish I had known last Jun that the 1150 was going to be outdated soon). I get great performance on FSX boxed acceleration with add ons / scenery pkgs. The one thing to watch is the PS. I see you have an EVGA 650W. I originally had a Corsair HXi 750W and it blew after ~ 7 months. Corsair was GREAT about replacing it, but in the meantime I replaced it with a CX 850W. 750W should have been enough power for my rig but just in case I'm keeping the 850W installed.

I will Watch out for the power supply. That really sucks because 650W is nearly double what I should need.

Nothing beats that smell of new electronics...

Agree! Mine could just have been a bad PS that died early.

IMO the Z97 1150 chip-set/MB isn't really outdated. If you really look at it most of the improvement from Z97 to Z170 are in the Intel graphics area. The speed of the CPU itself is little changed.

Intel has publicly stated that future CPU's will focus on reduced power consumption. (read mobile and tables improved battery life).

For the PC desktop gamer the biggest improvement is DDR4 memory. Followed by more PCIe lanes.

In general the book says to keep your PC unless upgrading by more than TWO generations. So in that regard, the Z97 is still well within it's service life.

Besides those people that went with Skylake back in June certain paid much more than if they waited until now....... But you on the other hand have had almost a year's use from the Z97.

I for one will be holding onto my 1150 motherboards and well be looking to pick up cheap CPU's when I run across "close out" sales.

PS. Nice rig. For a brand new build, it does make sense to go with Skylake.

Thanks! That's good to know. I happen to have 16GB DDR3 1600, would there be a noticeable improvement with DDR4 3200? Right now my system is flying great so I guess "if it's not broken..." but maybe in the future.

Me too! Thanks very much! Let's hope the assembly goes well. Never done this before. Watched the Newegg How to build a PC tutorial videos (all three hrs haha)... Going to have those playing as I go and have google up in another tab.
