If you have no experience with real world or VATSIM/IVAO ATC comms, I would suggest watching some videos to learn the basics.
There is the PE training program with videos to most ratings:
http://training.pilotedge.net/page/ratings
And if you search Youtube for "Pilotedge" you will also find many recordings of VFR and IFR flights on the network. People like Ty Shuff (catstrator on twitch/youtube) and some others do regular live streams and recordings of full flights.
I didn't have any experience with flying online or in the real world when i joined PE, so I am in the process of going through all the ratings. That's the way I learned (still leraning) the basics.

FWIIW, in the USA you do not have to ask before push/start
unless pushing into a "movement" area. Push and start is at your discretion.
+2 on the PE training.
Also use the PilotEdge receiver to monitor radio traffic. This will improve your "ear" regarding phrases and cadence of ATC communications.

Or load your sim and go to a non movement area at an airport with other pilots and monitor ground and tower. This has the added benefit of testing/proving your sim set up.
