I was trying to file an IFR flight plan from KSNA to KAPV, when a question popped up:

Looking at the procedures in effect at KSNA, the Anaheim 6 departure, Hector transition would be the best choice departing KSNA to the north east.
However, flying that SID all the way to Hector would not make much sense to me, because that would mean a detour. What about leaving the SID right at APLES instead of flying to HECTOR?
On the other hand, flying the complete SID until HECTOR and then on westbound to BASAL, which is the start of the GPS approach into KAPV looks like as the correct route for an IFR flight.

So, is is legal to shorten a given SID in the flight plan, and if so, how do I have to file it in the routing section?

Or do I have to file according to the published SIDs, airways and STARs?

Any clues are welcome!

It might be handy to mention the aircraft type and navigation equipment suffix.

The answer could be very different if a 737 verses 152.

Why is this important? Because some SID's/STAR may have rate of climb or min speed requirements that not all aircraft can meet.

In this particular case, it's a C172P with /A equipment.

If you file the ANAHM6 you have to file either SLI, HEC, LHS or VTU. Those are the only points that you can legally get off the departure procedure. You can't leave the SID at any in between point. It has to be a published transition. SLI obviously isn't listed at a published transition but you'll see the code for SID in the top left of the chart is ANAHM6.SLI (Which is the bare minimum of the procedure that you can legally fly)

Going to KAPV, obviously APLES would be the perfect place to fly to, you can't legally file ANAHM6 APLES as it isn't a published transition. However you can file AHAHM6 SLI V8 PDZ V442 APLES and be legal and it follows the ANAHM6 ground track all the way to APLES.

I personally wouldn't even file the SID and just file SLI V8 PDZ V442 APLES. The AHAHM6 SLI is just a simple fly heading 222, expect vectors to SLI anyway.
