Hello.
I recently take the cat 10 test. Unfortunately it was a fail
because I entered the pattern wrong way. Was told right downwind rwy 20r however I looked at my right and flown right but appearantly that was left downwind. Is the left right based on rwy directions?

I will redo the test tomorrow I believe

Anders,

Assuming this is your flight: http://peaware.pilotedge.net/flight.cfm?id=172863. You said the airport was on your right, but based on that map, you were southeast of SNA and the airport would've been on your left.

Put simply, when you turned from downwind to base....did you turn left or right? That will tell you if you were in left or right traffic.

Yep.
I realised my error now.
Turned left into Base. So I guess I was thinking wrong. I should be turning right to Base to be right downwind correct? Will redo the test when operation time is open again.
Thanks for the answer Keith

Correct.
It also looks like you landed on 19L instead of 19R. Is that correct?

Good luck on your next attempt.

When in right traffic the runway is always to your right, thats my rule to remember this :)

Come join us at L19 at 13:00z today for some pattern work if you want to, its good practice!

If it helps, "left traffic" and "right traffic" represent the turns that are made only once you are established in the traffic pattern. To ENTER the traffic pattern might return a variety of turns.

Ignore the maneuvering required to enter a pattern...only consider the downwind to base or base to final turns. That will definitively tell you if that pattern you have in mind is left or right traffic.
