following ATC directions

On my cat 5 I was instructed to inform atc of left base turn for runway 30. I was flying a heading of 106 degrees and planned to turn left down wind to call left base and I made that turn inside the delta. ATC gigged me that it looked like I was attempting to land on runway 12 and was instructed to fly straight in to the left base. Should I have turned to a course of 120 prior to entering the delta, and then enter the delta airspace on a course of 30?

When flying the pattern at a class D (or any other controlled field), you follow the controller's pattern entry instructions. You should have flown direct to a point that would put you on the Left Base leg for runway 30 as shown in the attached diagram. In this case you would not fly any sort of downwind leg.
