Could someone please explain possible scenario for flying VFR from KVNY to KBUR.
Airports are so close together that I have a hard time thinking of departure direction.
Both are class C , towered airports.
Should I request VFR from KVNY to KBUR while talking to clearance delivery and then follow directions or should I request departure to the ?????
This bothered me for a while, how you plan the VFR flight between airports so close apart.
Thank you. Cheers, AJ

Re: VFR KVNY to KBUR scenario
AJ,
I've heard this done in reality on a couple of occasions between those two fields. VNY is actually a Class D airport that sits adjacent to the BUR Class C and below the second shelf. The departure from VNY simply called ground for a VFR departure to BUR, I believe a transponder code was assigned and the aicraft was instructed to expect a left crosswind departure to join the runway 8 final at BUR and to expect a direct handoff to BUR tower. The release from BUR was obtained and the departure was cleared for takeoff on 16L to join the runway 8 final. Shortly after airborne, VNY tower handed the aircraft off directly to BUR tower. With towers those close, it's likely that, more often than not, you'll just go tower to tower unless traffic flow prevented that from happening. In the case of a situation where BUR would not be able to accept a straight-in approach, they would probably issue instructions to talk to SoCal for sequencing in which case you would get a transponder code and departure frequency to expect for sequencing.
Regards,

Re: VFR KVNY to KBUR scenario
It's actually very common to be handed from tower to tower when they're in such close proximity.
I used to fly from SQL to RHV and back over in Norcal during my pilot training. You'd be handed from SQL->PAO->NUQ->SJC->RHV tower without talking to TRACON (and SJC would radar identify you).
Your post sounds bang on, AJ.

BUR tower is in fact a 100% radar environment(ie At the same level as Approach or Center), so they might very well do the sequencing themselves.

I once had to fly R/W from Capital City PA to Harrisburg PA because Capital City airport was out of fuel when we arrived. Look them up sometime. Talk about a short flight. We departed and climbed into the right base for Harrisburg. Duration was maybe all of 3 to 5 minutes.

Gentlemen, thank you very much for all your input. The last thing to do now is to try it on PE.
Thank you very much. Cheers, AJ

Re: VFR KVNY to KBUR scenario
Quick update, I have tried today what you were helping with me with and worked great. I had to use "say again" once but I understood all fine. As I was climbing left crosswind RWY 16R from KVNY, I was directed to KBUR Tower to expect RWY 8 straight in approach. Worked great but things were happening very fast, I waited a bit long to start crosswind and ended up having to line up with the runway 8 a bit.
Thank you again for your help. PE rules!!! Cheers, AJ

Re: VFR KVNY to KBUR scenario
I've done that leg many times in real life. Used to be that you'd call VNY Clearance for a squawk code and departure instructions, but now you just taxi to the runway as usual and request a left crosswind departure to land BUR. VNY Tower usually tells the aircraft to make a left crosswind turn at the 101 freeway, and changes the aircraft to BUR before it even reaches the freeway so there's time to call the tower and be radar identified if necessary. A straight in to runway 8 is most common, but if there's a lot of traffic inbound they may sequence you for runway 15 instead. Don't think I've ever been switched to approach control for that type of leg. BUR Tower owns the airspace within the inner class C ring at and below 2500' MSL, and sequences aircraft accordingly. Hope that helps

Thank you very much, Markian, nothing better than a real life feedback on the subject and as you can see from previous replies, it all goes together well.
