Reality XP Garmin GNS 430W

Post by jtek »

Hello! First of all, I'm new here. Still in the trial period, but I plan to keep going when my trial is up, as I'm very impressed with the service and I'm having a great time. Okay, on to my question...

Is anyone else using the Garmin GNS 430W from Reality XP (with FS X)? I'm trying to use it to shoot approaches and fly SIDs/STARs, but the database is woefully out of date--I think it's from 2005. Just about every instrument procedure has been radically changed since then, making this thing kind of...useless. (Which is pretty frustrating, since I paid $50 for it.) The only procedure I've found to actually be flyable is the KCMA RNAV (GPS) Z RWY 26. Any thoughts? Is there a way to update the database?

Hi jtek,

Yeah, unfortunately the Reality XP GNS 430 is completely dependent on the database shipped with the Garmin GPS trainer and there is no way I'm aware of to update it.

I'm not aware of an up-to-date 430 or similar for FSX. For X-Plane, there's the FlyThisSim FTS430 which can be updated. Eric, the guy behind FlyThisSim, is a PE advocate and a guy worth supporting, but I understand if switching your sim platform altogether isn't really what you had in mind :)

Wow, that FTS stuff looks pretty amazing. I am hesitant to switch to X-Plane, but with Microsoft not really supporting MSFS anymore, I know I am going to be forced to switch eventually. This might be just the "killer app" that convinces me to do it!

FTS does make some very good stuff, it's worth a close look.

Here's how to update your Reality XP database to something a bit more recent (2009): http://flightsimaviation.blogspot.com/2 ... -waas.html

Thanks, Keith! That's exactly what I was looking for. I'll try it out when I get home tonight.

I'm using the Reality XP 430 for X-Plane 10 (and also fly out of CMA a lot).

Brandon, would it be possible for you to send me that file as well? It would be really helpful, as I'm having the same problem the OP is having- outdated gps data.

Thanks a bunch

This is partially incorrect. You can get a legal update in the RXP forums with summer 2011 navdata...you'll have to search a little as the post usually falls down a few pages:
