CloudAhoy App for the iPad

Post by gavink42 »

I stumbled across a free iPad app that looks like it will compliment training on PilotEdge and real world flights. It's called CloudAhoy. http://www.cloudahoy.com

My setup uses GPSSimCable (mentioned in the forums earlier) to pipe the FSX GPS coordinates to my iPad for use with ForeFlight. This works great, by the way!

CloudAhoy runs in the background, recording GPS data during your flights. Afterwards, you can debrief them using the app or on your PC with a browser.

I've only taken one flight on PE using CloudAhoy (the I-5 rating). So far it looks like it will be a great learning tool. Some of the debrief features apply more to instrument approaches. Since the I-5 ends with a visual approach, I wasn't able to play with those features.

I'll try to make time to do the I-6 tomorrow evening. With a full ILS including hold in lieu of procedure turn, there should get some good data to debrief with.

Thanks for posting, Gavin. I heard about this for the first time a couple of days ago, but had only seen it referenced for r/w flying. However, since there are no ways of fooling the IPad into thinking that you're flying a real plane by hooking into the sim, it stands to reason that you could use a tool like this after a PE flight. Great idea!

Post-flight analysis of flights can indeed be fascinating. The ground track data shown in the sim after the flight is great to review, but is easily lost after each flight. It's neat to see a high fidelity solution that keeps track of many past flights. I know Tim has some interesting plans for PEAware moving forward, too.

That sounds great, Keith! Speaking of future improvements....

I had been meaning to make a feature suggestion that the PE map http://map.pilotedge.net/map/ offer IFR enroute and VFR charts for a background.

Thanks again for a great service!
