ATIS

Post by kullery »

I know that there have been many threads discussing ATIS and its applicability on PE, given that users can each fly with their own weather settings.

For those that fly with real weather and want one additional piece of realism in the sim, I have included telephone numbers for most airport ATIS broadcasts in the frequency section of MyFLightRoute.com. I keep my cell phone handy and treat it as COM2 (dialling a phone number instead of tuning a frequency). Still no guarantee that PE will be mirroring real world operations but it does get you used to picking up the various pieces of information that real world ATIS provides. Perhaps this has already been a standard practice for many of you but I don't recall it ever being mentioned here before.

Also a quick note, all links for procedures on MyFLightRoute.com have been updated to reflect the current cycle of FAA publications(valid 07 FEB 2013 to 07 MAR 2013).

What a great idea! That'll definitely add to the immersion and realism. I'm going to give that a try.

It would be *really* awesome if we had an x-plane plugin that used VOIP to automatically dial the ATIS for a particular airport when we tuned in its ATIS, and send the audio to the speakers/headphones!

By the way, where do you get the ATIS phone numbers? I've only been able to find ASOS phone numbers.

Many ATIS phone numbers can be found on the airport information pages of Skyvector.com

Excellent job, Kenny. :D Just today , I used MyFLightRoute.com for all needed information for KLAX-KSAN TEC Route flight LAXX6.MZB in CRJ2.
ALL I had to write down was the readback instructions this time, weather, frequencies, plates etc. VERY happy to be able to use your work. Cheers, AJ :)

JN_, I pulled the phone numbers from the digital Airport/Facilities Directory. When available, they are published in the communications section for each airport.

By the way, thanks for the heads up on L53 vs. CA70. I'm still working to get all those incorrect X-Plane identifiers corrected in MyFLightRoute.com so drop me a note if you notice others.

VOIP plug in to dial via COM2 would be cool. Way beyond my abilities but maybe some developer could run with that idea. Another option (and I'm relatively certain Keith has considered this), would be for PE to periodically dial them up, record them and loop them back on the proper frequency. It sounds simple but I can imagine it would be a huge burden for the radio system. More significant for PE, would be the implication that they are operating consistently with the ATIS information. It would be virtually impossible for the controllers to keep up with the current ATIS info at every field they control. It would only be workable with the disclaimer that PE operations are not assured to be consistent with ATIS.

I've tried to learn more about D-ATIS which I understand is sent to the big iron drivers. I would love to pick up a text feed of that and display it in the application. If someone can point me to public domain information about this, let me know.

Where does Xplane get its ATIS from? I thought it got it online with real weather.
