Ghetto controllers for simming.

Post by djrisc »

So, I've spent quite a bit on sim controllers now. (Well at least for me.)

I have the Saitek Cessna yoke/throttle, rudder pedals, trim.

I couldn't bring myself to drop another $140 on a panel with switches on it.

So... I started looking around my studio (I have a recording studio in my house) for what I could re-purpose for use in simming.

I found a great solution and it works so well that I thought I'd share it here.

I have hooked up the NI Kontrol X1 midi controller to xplane. It works awesome!

First off it has 4 selector knobs that are 2-mode and you can push them for a button. This matches exactly to the knobs on the garmin 430. It then has a ton of other buttons that you can assign as well.

I'm now trying to get one set of the 4 encoders at the top to Chang each number for transponder.

Here is a picture of the controller:

Ok, so it's not the height of realism. But it works great.

So if you have any midi controllers sitting around your house, think about it. :) you can use Bome's free app Midi translator to convert midi data to any keyboard commands you want.

Just thought you might be interested!

Ok, so now I know what you mean by "ghetto controllers." You initially caught me off guard for just a second there. :) Based on your description, I thought we'd turn on PilotEdge and hear a different kind of Clearance Delivery.
