airspace deviations

Yesterday I did a flight without flight following, and despite my best effort, I busted a class D which I intended to circumnavigate. I was not on an ATC frequency, so I have no idea whether the controllers noticed. In fact, I did not find out about it until afterwards, upon reviewing my flight on PEAware. The class D in question was San Bernardino, and here is my flight: http://peaware.pilotedge.net/flight.cfm?id=26965. Here are some comments/questions regarding this:

* Is there any automated system for detecting when a pilot violates an airspace, or do the controllers have to notice this on their own?
* It's possible to bust an airspace and not know (as in my case), and not be on an ATC frequency. It would be cool if we could get some sort of e-violation to advise us.
* I found it very difficult to determine whether I had actually violated KSBD airspace using PEAware, because the airspaces are not rendered on the map view. In fact, I had to painstakingly plot the flight route by taking several points in the "position reports" listing and plot them in SkyVector as a flight plan, which took quite some time. I used Excel as an aid to convert between decimal and degree/minutes, and then dragged the flight plan line in SkyVector until I approximated the position. Here is the result: http://skyvector.com/?ll=34.03187986452 ... :A.K2.KRAL. It would be very helpful if the airspaces could be somehow rendered in the PEAware view. Alternatively, a hyperlink which would render the position reports as a flight plan in SkyVector would work.

I was intrigued by your idea of interfacing PEAware data to Skyvectors. I put together a simple form to help with this.

• Copy the PE Aware position report data.
  
  Go to http://www.myflightroute.com/routeplot.php
  
  Paste the data in the input box
  
  Press "SkyVector"

This should open SkyVector with your entire route. The chart will be centred on your first position report.


EDIT: original design required "cleaning" the data in a spread sheet, that is no longer required but there is an option to allow you to copy data from a spread sheet if you prefer.

I'll spend some time today and see about adding charts as map layers. I've wanted to do this previously but I have a much better idea now of how to do it...

Tim, can you just add a "SkyVectors" link on the PEAware page which would parse the LAT/LONG from the postion reports into a valid SkyVectors URL? That way all of the various SkyVectors charts are available as overlays for the route.

I'll be happy to send you the javascript I used if it's of any help.

I'd still prefer direct integration, but I can do that in the meantime. Code may well be helpful - email's in the sig.
