Clear for the Option - ATC Protocol?

So there you are on the downwind leg and ATC tells you that you are 'Clear for the option'. My question is this: is there a mandatory requirement to inform ATC about your intentions (full stop, touch and go etc) and, if so, at what point in the dialogue should this be declared?

If you're cleared for the option then we genuinely don't care what you do, otherwise, we would've cleared you for something more specific.

A controller may need your landing request information to make sure the pattern continues to run smoothly while multiple aircraft are in it. The amount of time a pilot spends using the runway can change quite a bit between a low approach and a stop and go, sometimes resulting in tight spacing. ATC can be creative in how they resolve this (360 degree turns, 270 degree turns, extended legs, direct the numbers for short approaches, etc.), but the information can help them to avoid bottlenecking at any segment of the pattern. Usually a controller will ask you report in at some point in the pattern (midfield downwind, abeam the numbers, turning base) - this would be the time to make your landing request. The more information, the less likely there will be a misunderstanding.
