tower closures affecting PilotEdge

Post by Keith Smith »

The final list of towered airports that will be have their towers closed due to budget cuts has been released today: http://download.aopa.org/advocacy/13032 ... osures.pdf

Here are the ones in the PE airspace: IFP, FUL, OXR, RAL, RMN, SDM, VCV, WHP, WJF

The DATES of the closures have not been finalized, but when they are announced we'll be mirroring them here. We'll likely have an event to commemorate their closure. Once the towers are closed, they will become non-towered airports.

Edit: the dates have been posted (thanks Ken):
4/7
FUL
RAL
RNM
WHP

4/21
WJF

I am sure that there will be great interest in flying to/from these 9 airports before they become "non-towered".

A special page has been been created on MyFLightRoute.com which exclusively supports flights in and out of these airports.

One wonders (me wonders :) ) if there might be a slight increase in the size of the coverage area since there are fewer towers now.

That's a bummer. I build custom maps for at least 2 of those airports. Not sure about KRAL, might have but not sure. WJF had some great spawn points and was good to fly to Mojave Spaceport from.

Wasn't KFUL already uncontrolled?

Fullerton is a towered airport. Otherwise, it wouldn't be showing up on a tower closure list :) A quick check of the sectional will confirm.

Definitely a bummer. Couple of my favorites are on that list.

Guys, they are not leveling these airports to build a mall :) You'll be able to enjoy the airport long after the tower is closed.
