When an aircraft on an IFR flight plan is vectored anywhere along the way to a new heading by ATC, is it required that ATC give a reason for the vector, or is discretionary? I can't remember NOT hearing a reason for a vector ("vector for spacing", "vector to final approach course", "vector to V23", etc.), but perhaps I just don't remember correctly.
Looking at 7110.65 section 6, 5-6-2(b), it looks like it is required, but trying to correctly interpret 7110.65 without any background in ATC is an interesting challenge.
If it is required, and if a new vector is required for the same reason as the previous one, does the advisory have to be repeated? Say we've been given "fly heading 100, vector for spacing", and the controller decides "hmm, that's not going to get me the spacing I want" and gives the pilot another turn -- "fly heading 120" -- do they have to repeat "vectors for spacing"?

As far as my training and practice, it only needs to be mentioned once so long as the reason stays consistent.
For example, "fly heading 040, vectors ILS Runway 31R Approach" is then followed by a series of vectors without having to repeat the reasoning.

Anthony's got it. Additionally, if you're on a vectored SID, the reason for the vector is implied by the instructions in the SID, so you won't hear a reason then either.
