Just came across this video on YT of a DA-42 Twinstar shooting the ILS 24 at CRQ (just like our I-2 rating): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGBkPhgYIQY

Three things to note:
1) the pilot reads back the heading and app clearance, and then fails to execute the turn in a timely fashion
2) once the instructor reminds him to turn, he limps into it at less than standard rate.
3) he later misses a radio call

1&2 result in him going through the localizer. #3 means he was probably task-saturated, but still should've been listening for subsequent calls.

Watching that video is giving me flashbacks to some of my early IFR training flights. I'm sure I did worse on my first few instrument approaches! Doing IFR training in So Cal has its pros and cons. Con: the busy airspace is pretty damn intimidating for a student pilot, but pro: having earned my ticket here, I feel completely confident flying just about anywhere.

LOL I heard a Cessna 242 on that video...

Cool video btw... sorta felt like me tonight in the helo... although that thing hand flies on XP a little harder than a twinstar probably does in real life... plus he had hands to manipulate stuff with - argh the mouse!

One thing I thought of towards the end of that video. Holy crap, did anyone else get annoyed by that TIS/ADSB traffic call thing right as the guy was near minimums? Short final, critical phase of flight at a towered airport, and boom "TRAFFIC." Do you guys fly with that sort of automation and is it helpful? Is it hurtful?
