KIZA Wedding

Post by Steven Winslow »

I spent the afternoon at KIZA today in preparation for a wedding we're shooting tomorrow. The ceremony is set to be at the glider port with the chairs and archway set up 20 feet or so to the south of the glider port office just east of the approach end of runway 26. The reception will be in the groom's hangar. He has a Pitts Special housed there normally, but tomorrow it will be displaced by tables, chairs and a bunch of guests. The groom started flight training when he was 12, soloed at 16 and got his PPL at 17. He now flies a Boeing 747 LCF Dreamlifter. I don't recall who he flies for, but I'll post that tomorrow after the wedding. If we have time tomorrow morning, we're going flying in a 172, I think. All he said was it's a 4-seater Cessna, but he never mentioned which one. He also has a Citabria that is being recovered. It's fun being down here in the real world and seeing places I've flown over in the PE cyberworld. It's great to be back here in SoCal. My wife graduated from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara in 2006 and I used to spend quite a bit of time down here while we were long distance dating. We haven't been back here for about 5 years. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Sounds cool! I would guess he works for Atlas, since they have the LCF operation contract. I'd be curious to know how he got the LCF gig.

If you get a chance to speak with him, ask if he was operating the Dreamlifter out of Charleston, VA last year where they were stuck behind a Cirrus while holding short of the runway for departure. The pilot checked in with tower and said, "#2 in sequence, and please pass on our thanks for the AMAZING sequencing work there by ground."

I was on final at the time and offered to go around so the Cirrus would get out faster (it looked downright comical in front of the DreamLifter), but the tower said, "naaahhhh. You're fine." He really didn't gave a hoot :)

Sounds cool, isn't that area beautiful? MAN, do I miss CA...

Looking forward to pics, if for no other reason than to get some more r/w views of KIZA for my scenery package I'm (re)building.

I'll try to get some aerial views for you if we actually get to fly today. It's a sweet little airfield.

I'll ask him about Charleston for you, Keith.

Atlas sounds right now that you mention it.

Interesting, the last time I flew into KIZA was for a friend's wedding. He didn't get married at the airport though, it was a private residence in nearby Solvang. Beautiful area!

We didn't get to fly yesterday but we're going up in a 182 in about an hour. He says the windows are a bit crazed, but I'll do my best to get some aerial views of KIZA.

Keith, he didn't remember the scenario you described, but he has flown the Dreamlifter in and out of Charleston, SC (not Charleston, VA) quite a bit so he said it wouldn't surprise him if he was indeed on board that day. And yes it is Atlas that he works for.

I'll post some pics tomorrow when I'm back in home.

Sorry for the delay in posting these, but I'm still trying to catch up from being out of the studio for a week. We were supposed to be home Sunday night, but our flight out of LA was delayed for weather and we weren't going to make our connection in SLC so we had to spend another night in LA. We were rerouted again Monday morning and finally got home Monday evening.

Here are some shots from the flight, including a glider tow that took off just ahead of us. I have a bunch of aerials and ground level shots that should help with scenery development that I am happy to share. Just PM me or e-mail me at winslowphoto@yahoo.com and I'll send them to you.
