Don was going to have me land the plane, but as we were approaching the field there were three other planes coming in: a Tiger Moth, a Piper Tri-Pacer and a C172. The 172 turned out to let us go in first before the Tiger Moth and Tri-Pacer since we were closest to the field. Since we had to do a short approach, he took over and did the landing.

There are four helicopter "pads" at the east end of the ramp. This insignia is near one of them.

This was my first time real world flying out of a non-towered field. It was a great learning experience listening to Don communicate with the other pilots in the area. We flew for about 45 minutes. I was PIC for all but the take-off and climb to 2500 msl. I did some gentle turns and one steep turn and experienced some updrafts and downdrafts as we went over the hills to and from the coast. I got to bring it in to short final and Don landed it. He was a bit heavy, by his own admission. He said his CFI would have said something like, "I've seen atom bombs make better landings than that." We definitely stuck when we touched down.

This was the first flight that I actually controlled the throttle and minded the gauges. Don was pretty impressed with my ability to maintain altitude and my control of the plane. Truly a great experience. Thanks to X-Plane and PilotEdge for giving me the confidence to "fly the plane."

I didn't know Buellton had a pier. Next time I'm out there I'll have to check it out.
