Questions

Post by JustinWheat »

After successfully completing a few of the IFR ratings I have two questions. First question is what is the dinging noise you hear sometimes from the controller's side when you call in? Traffic advisories? Second question is today at 4:00pm CST was the controller operating KSNA ground new? Never heard the voice on frequency before.

The noise is most likely the Conflict Alert (CA) sound from VFR traffic nearing a tracked target on the radar. It can be inhibited, but will continue to go off for the duration of the time that another target's projected path is intersecting with a tracked target for a specified distance (usually within 3-5 miles). In reality, I believe we'd be able to inhibit it with the use of certain beacon codes that the program would recognize to ignore the alert from sounding.

I was curious about it. Thought it sounded pretty neat.
