Weight Calculator?

Post by djrisc »

So I've been trying to make my simming more and more as realistic as possible. I've decided to start actually doing the weight calculations before flight in the 172.

I'm a little shocked by the complete lack of weight calculator applications? I was expecting there to be a features in ForeFlight or some other iOS app that would do the calcs based on Weight, ARM, Moment?

Am I missing something?

Pretty sure I've heard of W&B apps before, I just haven't tried hard to get them. Practically speaking, with simple GA planes, you start thinking more about weight than anything else. You have to work pretty hard to get them out of the published CG ranges (at least in my limited experience with 172's and Pipers). For a 172 with one pax in the front and one in the back, you'd be hard pressed to get it out of whack. The only thing I could think of (at a guess) would be max cargo in the back and two heavy pax in the back with no pax up front (a combo I've never seen). Maybe then you could coerce it over the aft cg limit.

Of course, once you've look a cabin class seating, the B in W&B takes on new significance.

I use the "Aviation W&B" app on my iPad (also works on iphone). It works very well. Xavion (made by Austin Meyers, CEO of x-plane) also does W&B and a number of other things, but I haven't tried it. They have an x-plane only version for $10 or a $100 version for RW flying. Looks awesome based on the videos.

I've been very happy with WnB Pro, on my iPad. It allows multiple aircraft configurations that can be customized to your aircraft. Gives a nice chart that shows the envelope along with takeoff and empty fuel CG points.

Some small aircraft have significant CG shifts with fuel burn. The graphic makes it easy to load properly to stay in envelope at all points of the flight.
